School Teacher’s House

On a quiet rural road in South Carolina sits a beautiful country home last owned by a retired schoolteacher. Property records indicate this ranch-style five-bed, two-bath brick home was built in the early 1960s. In researching the family, I discovered that the family has deep ties to South Carolina that span generations. During the Civil War, the grandfather of the original owner served as a private in the Confederate Army. After being captured by Union troops, he ended up as a prisoner of war. One of the owners’ siblings was an early 20th century politician who served as a state representative and later in Congress until his death.

Given the area, the husband likely worked in some sort of agriculture or farming and the wife was a schoolteacher. From their obituaries, the couple enjoyed entertaining and were active in the local social scene hosting bridge and social clubs at their residence as well as being active in their local church. They had two children and later a handful of grandchildren. Their daughter followed in her mothers’ footsteps and graduated from the University of South Carolina and became a teacher. She moved to Florida where she taught school for 40 years and outlived two husbands. After her parents’ deaths, she inherited the family home and returned to South Carolina to live out her retirement years until her death several years ago. As you can see, the home is still quite a showpiece and likely hosted many guests throughout the years. Today, the property is still owned by same family who now mostly live out-of-state, and given its untouched nature, the house and its contents may be tied up in probate.
