The City of Forest Park Police Department, which is located ten miles south of downtown Atlanta, opened in 1993. Besides serving as the main base for police operations, the facility also operated as a jail, which housed inmates prior to them being transferred to county jail or released on bail, and a municipal courtroom. There are four cell blocks in the jail, each with two tiers.
Each cell block has its own fenced yard. Two of the cell blocks are currently used as storage. One has been converted into a gym for the police department, and the fourth is used for filming. Extra bunk beds were added recently to the cells by the city to house the homeless during cold weather. The Forest Park Jail was decommissioned in the early 2000s and now serves as a popular filming location for television, film, and music productions. One of the most notable films shot here was the 2009 Tyler Perry film Madea Goes to Jail.
